Why magical results often arrive sideways

One of the more irritating features of magic is that it often works in ways we do not expect. If magic simply failed, it would be easier to dismiss, and we could quit and take up a less taxing hobby like macramé or naked shark wrestling.

The problem is that it frequently does something. It moves the situation, alters the field and produces a result. Then the magician looks at what has happened and says, “That is not what I asked for.”

At which point the universe, spirits, unconscious, gods, angels or whatever force has been dragged into the operation appears to shrug and say, “You asked for movement. You got movement. Learn to read.”

Magical results often arrive sideways because magic rarely obeys the narrow fantasy of the conscious mind. We like to imagine a straight line from intention to outcome. Ask for money, and surely that means cash lands in your lap. Ask for love, and naturally the right person appears with flowers, emotional maturity and no unresolved shit. Do a protection spell, and the fantasy is usually that your enemies vanish into some symbolic abyss while you remain spotless, vindicated and radiant.
